Cali ripped up the Sawatch 50K and the boys + Europeans went on a wee hike

The Night Before 09-26
We arrived at the campsite by Buena Vista after an afternoon catching up with Patrick and crew at Oktoberfest in Breckenridge and set up our tents (other than Dom who was committed to cowboy camping) . Cali got right to her knitting and we got together a meatball pasta for the evening. It was also mid-autumn festival so we chatted and watched it rise into the sky. It was nice moment to reminisce life in Hong Kong and feel a little closer to family.

Race day! 09-27
We woke up to a tequila sunrise on the plains. Dom woke up on the floor - his mattress had deflated during the night. At least he didn't pass out and smack his face on the ground like he had done the last we went camping.
Race day was upon us and Cali got bibbed up. Patrick surprised us by showing up early to see Cali off. The lad woke up and drove over from Keystone at 5:30am.

And with a bang they were off.

The side quest (Mt.Princeton)
Now that Cali was off, we had to get a little mission in ourselves. We couldn't let her do all the epic stuff herself. We decided to tackle Mt.Princeton just up the road from camp and see how it'd go.
It was a short hike, but had some fun rock scrambling and snow from the last few days were sticking (maybe a good sign of this supposedly Super El Nino we should be receiving to deliver).

End of the race
We hurried back down the mountain, which I loved. I'm learning that, in addition to nighttime power hiking up mountains, technical trail running on medium to large rocks is my jam. The route finding is so much fun to do.
We unfortunately missed Cali at the 40K checkpoint but had enough time to grab some pizza on the way to the start/finish line and see her run in. We were all so proud of her and quite astounded by how high-spirited she was (I would be fucked and throwing a fit if I had just done 50K).
What a fulfilling weekend that was felt thrown together at the last minute and jam packed - my favourite! We can end it here and not talk about the drive back.
